About Me
“When the music changes, so must your dance.”
— Elaine Welteroth
Hi, I’m Dr. Helene Jacobs
I’ve spent the better part of my life dedicated to understanding people—how they think, feel, and navigate the challenges that life throws at them.
Here are a few things I believe:
Relationships matter. Within the context of a warm, safe, and accepting relationship, solutions to all sorts of problems can be discovered.
Our body, mind, and spirit are intertwined.
We are all connected to each other, to the earth, and to nature.
There is a wisdom deep inside ourselves that has the answers to our own wellbeing.
True health and wellness is not just the absence of disease but optimal functioning and happiness.
Nurturing that deep place of wisdom allows us to experience true health and happiness.
My Clinical Journey
My journey into psychiatry was shaped by a mix of personal experiences and professional training. After earning my MD from the Medical College of Hampton Roads, Eastern Virginia Medical School, I began my medical career with a general surgery internship, aiming for plastic surgery. But my path took a turn when I found my true calling in psychiatry, where I could truly connect with people and help them through their most challenging times.
I completed my Psychiatry Residency at Mt. Sinai Hospital/Mt Sinai School of Medicine and followed that with a Child & Adolescent Fellowship at Yale Child Study Center. Over the years, I’ve earned additional specialized training in psychopharmacology, trauma-informed care, motivational interviewing, functional medicine, and integrative practices. I believe in treating the whole person, not just the diagnosis, which is why I pursue continual education in these areas to better support my patients.
“We are not trapped or locked up in these bones. No, no. We are free to change. And love changes us. And if we can love one another, we can break open the sky.”
— Walter Mosley
Outside of the Clinical Setting
I’m a published poet who had the honor of earning two Honorable Mentions in the William Carlos Williams National Poetry Competition. Writing continues to be a passion, whether it’s writing poetry, crafting short stories, or working on my novel-in-progress. I also love dancing—especially to pop and hip-hop. I enjoy exploring different cultures, from social values and music to folk tales and cuisine. Diverse kinds of music move me. My tastes are eclectic, ranging from current pop/hip-hop to American Song Book to scat jazz, soul, Latin, Brazilian, African and classical.
At home, I’m the proud mom of three unique humans and two cats. Gardening keeps me connected to the resilience of life. I am in awe of the way a garden adapts and thrives, even under challenging conditions.
Above all, I’m a connection junkie. I love being around people I resonate with, sharing meaningful and positive experiences. Everything tastes and feels better when it’s shared!
